Just because the pump is aluminum doesn't mean it's better. Just word of caution. No way to know how long these will last. My original "cheap" plastic pump survived 80k of daily driving in town miles.

The pump he installed is definitely for N54. We need more info. I think mine cracked already and its only been used like 8k miles -_-

A quick Google I found duralast make both plastic and alloy covers with the same reference oem part number. Worth a shot. My VW plastic pump housing cracked as well and it's a totally stock car, can't blame vibration. It did have an oil leak and I read the oil can make the housing gasket swell that results in the cracking. I'd say same issue with my 135. Amongst two German cars I've had three cracked plastic housings in two years.

My N55 water pump died from electrical issues and it is exactly the same as the N54. I thought that was the most common issue, not plastic cracking.

While cracking is one of the most common issues, internal issues are also out there from age. Here are some links to other causes of failures. While you could take it apart, it happens to be ultrasonically welded, and wont come back together without a lot of work. It's a shame because the N52 pump rotor is also made out of metal while ours is plastic

Just got my pump in yesterday. 100% not plastic. I'll give you the title to my car if you bring it to a metallurgist and confirm lol.

Build quality: ?/10 (because longevity)
Fit: 10/10
Warranty: Lifetime replacement (just warrantied my old pump at o'reilly. Got this one.)

Again: I verified myself that it's aluminum. Scratch it and it leaves behind more metal. Now it's just the pump motor that we'll have to see.

Didn't take a photo of the plug, but each pin was insulated from making any sort of contact with each other and the housing.

Finished the bleed cycle and the pump sounds exactly like a new continental pump. No leaks anywhere so that's a start

When I installed my top mount I replaced my water pump while I was in there. My stock water pump housing was all metal. Replacement oem from fcp all plastic. I think i saved it somewhere.

Can you get the part number off it? That's interesting that some oem pumps were metal, what year was your car made?

06 build date iirc it is a 2007 e92 335i. As far as I know it was the original water pump.

I will look for the part and get the part number and some pics of it. I am 90% sure I saved it because it was all metal which I knew was semi unique when I pulled it. I hate throwing out known good parts even if they have miles on them...

My guess is the internals are the same. The housing should have little affect at any on the life of the water pump in most cases. That being said the known cases of split or damaged plastic n54 water pumps is alarming.

that's interesting. mine was an 08 and plastic, so maybe they switch to plastic really early on in n54 production, making the aluminium ones that rare.

My car had a metal thermostat when I got it, replaced with plastic from fcp. Pump was plastic but likely replaced before with 130k on the clock. 2007 335i March build if I recall correctly

Aluminum pumps proven to be any more reliable or durable than the plastic continental?

I always found the N54 water pump strange. It looks like a turbo.
