My car is an E90 335 with an N55 engine. Are you saying that if I use the 8HP45 transmission, which is compatible with the N55 engine, such as the transmission used in the F35, I won't need to use cantcu to achieve it?
They were talking about a physical adapter plate between the engine and transmission. You still need to facilitate communication between the transmission and the ECU, which is what this device does.

ZF 8 HP 70 transmissions are in ram 1500 3.0L diesel trucks.. any reason they would not be useable in my E 90 335xi 6AT

I've received a reply from someone, he said yes they will soon have software to run the transmission, but it would need an adapter for the motor and transferase.
i guess that seems obvious. :dizzy:

i don't think you can use any 8hp70, it has to be a bmw specific one. And at that i believe you can't use the cheaper one out of a 550i, it has to be out of a Diesel inline 6 bmw. let me know what you find and how it works out. Im intrigued by this swap but it was very difficult to find a Rwd Diesel 8hp70 in Canada.

The guy I emailed produced the conversation kits for this topic. He says it would work technically, but the front and back would not be mountable. Meaning there's no adapter plates.
As for the diesel aspect, I think that would affect what the lock up speed on the torque converter is.

What did u pay for that transmission?

I picked up a 8HP45 the other day out of a 2014 335 to use in my 2009 E61 535. Does anyone know if I can use the original flex plate that is currently in there with the 6HP, or am I going to need to track down the flex plate that would have been on that N55 powered 335?

Anyone in this thread using the CANTCU w/ upgraded twins? I'm using the CANTCU and currently running into issues with a 8hp45 and upgraded twins, logs are showing "Tq Limiter 4" on all WOT pulls even with a XHP stg3 flash.

I don't have first-hand experience here, but looking through the CANTCU Wiki, it seems that the Torque Correction Factor might help you with this in lieu of any tune changes:

Kenneth reached out to me and took a look at my logs, we narrowed it down to the torque value being reported from the DME. I guess the MSD80 is known for this. I'm still in the process of getting the car dialed in, so every time there's a change in my tune I'd have to compare TCU and DME tq values from the logs and adjust the correction factor. Them TPC Stg2 turbskis are a ripper on the 8hp though, no traction 1st-4th on street tires and only traction issues in 1st-2nd on MT radials :tearsofjoy:.

Hey man I'm doping research on the same project and from everything I've read you can use the n55 flex plate, but I'm not 100% certain. How is the swap going for you? Would love to know more details on it!

I currently have engine and transmission out and I am dealing with spun rod bearings. I have confirmed the original 6hp flex plate bolts up to the torque converter of a 8hp45. I was going to get a friend to make some adapters to make the original cooler lines work, I haven't been able to find anything available to use the original hoses.

I found a video with a guy that had a billet adapter set for -8 AN lines for n aftermarket cooler. Apparently using the stock cooler can cause trans temps to stay too cold and not get up to temp. People can get around this by using an inline thermostat. I’ll try and send you a link to the video with the AN line adapter 👍

ZF8HP's are found in lots of different cars/manufacturers, I wouldn't use any 8HP outside of one manufactured for BWM.
BWM actually has a larger diameter output shaft, by about 4mm if I remember correctly.

That being said there are BMW 8HP70 and 8HP75 out there, but most are in Europe and not in North America.
I had my GA8HP75Z shipped all the way from Bulgaria! Look on the diesel BMWs with the N57 motor like the X5 and X6.
You'll need an adapter plate; I got mine from Domiworks.

Here's more info about the 8HP

Yea, surely a lot of power there, very nice! :sunglasses:

A 8HP70/75/90 would be a good alternative for the 6HP. The 70 takes around 1100Nm (800ft) of torque in stock form, and the others some more. With enough abuse, anything will break though. :grinning:
Allright, after some struggles with increased boost levels to 35psi got issues in that swapped 6hp26 and one friend got unused billet upgraded stage2 8hp70x without use anymore... so i bought it.

At the same my car get 3500rpm stall turbine, turbolamik 2.0 tcu ... and all those good stuffs..

Everything should be here in few weeks... finger crossed

I was trying to hold off on making a post on this until after I got to the track but... I’ve been running the CANTCU for about a month now E90/N54/xDrive 8HP45X (first ever?) I am impressed with how far the software has come in just the short time and how fast Ken was able to implement various fixes (and improvements) throughout the Beta. There was plenty of bugs to work out in the beginning mostly Gas vs Diesel issues and I know I was the Bane of Ken’s existence for a while but it all paid off in the end. The Software is very polished now and he’s still pumping out the updates. While I am still working on the DME tune (IJE0S xDrive life) side of things as time allows, I can say this implementation is as close to oem as you’re going to get for this type of swap. By far best “mod” I’ve done so far besides upgraded turbos. Second gear gets placed in a very nice ratio between the 6hp’s 1st/2nd for launch and just DD duties in general. There is also maybe a little placebo effect going on banging through all the gears so quickly when you’re used to the long 6HP. It definitely livens things up a little more.

I opted to try this unit over the others for a few reasons. First I couldn’t find one example of the other options out there having functional xDrive outside of a reply to a YouTube comment saying it would be possible. Secondly you are using the oem TCU in this case programmed by ZF and combining that with XHP which I feel has proven to be quite reliable over the years. There has been far more testing than all the others out there with this combo. Direct control of solenoids/full standalone I’m sure has its advantages over this at racecar level but for me I wanted to be able to hand the keys to my wife without worries or her telling me somethings not right. Another factor was the language barrier vs the others. While Ken is based out of Finland he spoke perfect English and was not an issue at all even with al the technical speak. Time difference was the only thing that got in the way sometimes but I’m not sure if the guy sleeps anyways? None of that should matter now since the unit is plug and play past initial setup, this was all during testing.

For the physical swap itself the only modification required is adapting of the smaller 6HP oil cooler lines to the larger ports of the 8HP45. There’s several offerings out there like th adapter plates take your pick. And for the exhaust mount to the transfer case I had to find just the right length bolt/bushing washer/combo to make the stock bracket work because the pan seems to sit a little further back than the 6hp. Otherwise a direct swap. This applies when converting from 6HP19/21 to 8HP45X from an N55 powered F10 in my case. 8HP70 will require an adapter plate setup and I may regret not taking that path once I really start pushing it but time will tell. So far holding up ok in the 550-600whp range for me. I was concerned about the additional length with xDrive being uncharted territory. I didn’t have one to compare but if it were to add even a few mm To the overall package I suspect I would be needing a custom driveshaft at the very least. The 8HP45 is largely the same trans used on the B58 powered stuff now and they seem to be doing ok at least up to my power goals currently. These trans are cheap and readily available if you shop around but I definitely do not want to have to do this swap again anytime soon at least without a lift…

Next up I will hopefully get back to the drag strip soon, maybe tomorrow to see what kind of net ET gain there is at the same power level as last year. I suspect it should be significant from my 60ft alone. Here’s just a short video I made for internet proofz please don’t make fun of my skills lol

I’d be happy to answer any questions on the swap. This is not a paid promotion, no one put me up to this. Just a happy PITA customer 😁
I have a question. I own a 2011 335i xdrive e90 and I was wondering if you could help me. I have a spare 8-speed transmission from a 535i xdrive n55 and I was wondering what do I need to bolt it on and have it working? The coding I could maybe get a bmw specialist. Please email me if you could @[email protected]

i think you have 6hp21 in that car? that 8hp in 535i should be 8hp45 so it`s smallest one of 8hp
without so much torque capacity increase so why do this swap? more gears? some other reason?

transfer case should be bolt on, same with trans cross member, prop shafts, etc.
you need a gear lever assy from 1x 8hp e84, then check turbine offset from both to get them same (flex plate distance from engine rear end surface)

suggest to buy turbolamik, cantu or similair kit to get them work properly

It's a extra transmission I have because my transmission slips when accelerating in 5th gear. I don't know why it does that but it's really annoying and I just was wondering if the swap is possible.

Today was first runs with this billet internal 8hp70 turbolamik 2.0 3500 stall converter.

there was few issues on this 6hp to 8hp swap, struggled with them some extra 8-10 hour before solved everything out.
Lamiks complete wiring is awesome, work like charm and it`s very good quality, installation few hour.
Lamiks circuit board to reroutine orginal TCU fits like glow, installation with mechatronic few hour.
turbine mod to get 8hp turbine to n54 few hour.
installing gear display and program switch including diagnostic display prox 1 hour
Lamik adaptor fits well, no wuss on that.

then the struggle started, first i had some small issues to get my laptop connect to Lamik, it was about tunerpro comnnections and took me 2 hour to resolve, just testing untion it connected (dummy me)

paddles started to work without gear selector 1x e84 but when selector was connected, it blocked those flaps too.
double and triple checked everything including Lamik TCU cabling, Lamik pin layout, 6hp to 8hp connector, measured everything many times.. until... spoiler alert...

they did a mistake on Lamik homepage in manual--1X e84 wiring picture, it`s totally wrong pin layout, pins numbered fron wrong end of connectoe and ign feed and ground is crossed..

The right one is to be found on HTG similair picture where cables are right
-pin1 green +12v feed
-pin2 empty
-pin3 yellow canL
-pin4 white canH
-pin5 grey +12v ignition
-pin6 brown ground

that took me 8 hour to find out where the fault was that selector don`t wake up..

i did inform Lamik that they fix that on their homepage
