My review for the BimmerLife coil upgrade

Well nonetheless I would be interested in seeing some test results. Because it seems like everyone has their own theories on which one should be better than the other, but some real results would be awesome

The only meaningful metric to my mind is the presence or absence of misfire. Increased plug gaps make misfiring more likely. Plus the higher gap puts more strain on the electrical circuitry. I'd put the beefy units offered by PR ahead of the OEM Audi units when it comes to durability. But I have serious doubts about the current state of DME mapping for any coils dependent upon the engine computer for dwell times.

And I have to say that any claims of big powaz improvements lacking proof proper test controls were enforced.... well, I'm not buying that.

Please explain what you mean by this? Dwell time is related to the properties of the coil itself.. this simply needs to be set appropriatly in the DME for the coils you're running. As the PR coils are similar to stock electrically they can be run with stock dwell settings but see benifits with slightly longer dwell time. Audi coils have a much shorter dwell time but in exchange they draw far more current.

Someone should run a comparison to see if there actually is differences in dwell. Otherwise it just seems like the main difference is the amount of extra stress it puts on the DME which also might be negligible ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm running the stock n20 NGK plug from BMW, stock gap. Did not touch it. .031 supposedly. 23psi, no hiccups at all. Smooth as butter.

Thats what I keep reading is the go to plug set up for them.

Does "can be run with stock dwell settings" rise to the standard where it's worthwhile to buy and fit "dumb" coils? I ask because for years on the VW/Audi platform, it hasn't. Lacking access to the relevant dwell timing tables, an otherwise good coil pack upgrade is wasted.

Sure it is. You set it in the main dwell table, disable multispark and adaptations, andddd... done. The fact that you keep arguing this is honestly hilarious.

Now, if you don't disable multispark or adaptations, it will not follow the base table.

I should have responded sooner. I agree with a lot of what you say on the subject, but the DME dwell tables work. If you'd like to see proof I have the scope shots at different settings, and under load. All the way up to around 18 amps and 6.5ms dwell.

Also, without changing dwell settings there is a small benefit, namely though they'd likely never fail there lol. If you're worried about dwell, though, we have a fix for cars we have no control over as well that will allow the coils to fully charge without any dwell or flash changes. It takes an extra bit, but opens a world of possibility and increases their output to boot. PM if you want to test it out.
