I don't understand why a clean filter means anything, except it is not trapping anything. The problem is small particulate. There is plenty of info on filters, K&N lore, etc on the net - I won't waste anyone's time since Google is one's friend.

Oh, it was certainly doing it's job, I cleaned a typical amount of debris out for my environment. My point about "like new" was to the condition of the plastics, rubber seals, filter media and support screening... In short it was simply being well behaved.

Aside from clarifying that detail, I totally agree with your post
