Othe upgrades, the fuel log, obviously there is a difference here, or the wouldn’t make it, right? There had been a few big discussions about doing rod bearings, some agree, some disagree, King and ARP. I had to do these into the night as well. The top bearings all had the same wear, as all these engines I’ve seen, the lower were spotless.

A few other items done, front seal, and wrapped VRSP pipes, also on the table is a fuel pump option, run a big 400 or 450, or running twin 265 or 300 in a m5 bucket. Weighting out options, as I plan on running nitrous. This is a huge in what step to go in, not looking into pour a tone of money at, a 450 may do it, but I’ll need headroom. I have an m5 bucket I can work with, and it’s set up for twins, looking for max liters for e85 use while staying under the 20 amp margin. Plans are twin nitrous cp nozzles, Big Tom intercooler, and a custom inlet system. I wanted to install the 08 navigation, but it’s way outdated, and at this point, useless. Waze is so much simpler, I’d rather spend time on useful mods, that’s just money lost.

I switched to the larger one, and drilled out the office. The smaller hole tube was off the 535, in which had turbo and injectors upgraded. The larger tube came off a 335 motor that I bought with a spun bearing. From all the readings there has been huge discussions about wether or not this helps with pressure or not, but I plan on running e85 with this, so the larger hole will help with the required volume.

Take look at the Avin USA Android screens as a replacement for the iDrive interface.

Really good update for the tired E60 models

Well, things has been slow, engine’s out, done a good cleaning, and looking into what I can use between the n52, and n54. There has been a few noticeable parts between the two, since the engine was out of an awd car, the left side mounts are are not compatible. The left mount is from the n52, xi on the right, it would sit further back. The mounting bolts are also different, the left are n52 aluminum, xi bolts on the right, steel.

The n52, flex plate has a spacer, unlike the xi, which is just a plate, here’s the n52. I know the xi has its own catalog, I figured most of the n52 engine accessories would be compatible, finding out there opposite,

When you finally get this beast up and running I can't wait to do a few pulls with you. Any ETA?

Ya, definitely want to hook up, you have some great knowledge of this platform, and always admired your opinions. Unfortunately, my time is so spread out, I’ve been wanting this swap for a long time, things have gotten sidetracked, hopefully motors in soon. I’ll keep the up this thread!

How hard was it to swap the motors, Im plannjng something similar but a straight swap, e60 535i to e60 535i, I do have a question though, one tranny on the VIN decoder shows as "Sport Auto" and one shows as Auto?

Another note I completely left out, the n52 is a 06-07 yr, 6 bolt crank. This n54 is a late 07 for 08 8 bolt, so not if the earlier years are compatible, both are same diameter

Swapping the motors are straight forward if your going rwd to rwd, or xi to xi. The swap I’m doing is xi to rwd n52, so there’s a bit of differences between the two. This is all about a budget build, what everyone has always said that it was not worth it, or you couldn’t make it work. There are pros and cons with all builds, I knew this was something I can do with ease. My biggest enemy is time, so it’s taken me forever it seems. I also was counting on n52 accessories to work were the xi stuff didn’t, so documenting along the way in case others were interested in this, has also taken time. I’ve found no info on swaps like this, because it’s already available. If I had to do it over, a BMW would be my last choice, but I love the car, so it begins..

The n52 came with a plastic pulley, figured I use it being lighter and less rotational mass. I’ve read a few threads of these things splitting taking the belt with it. The only steel pulley I had was of the 535xi pump that was dynamic, well, there not compatible, so I’ll have to source one, I don’t trust it, now I know about them coming apart.

Ah, so more comparisons, the n52 na radiator vs the 535xi. The condensers are also a big difference, though the xi would be the bigger one.

Looking at options to stay with the n52 radiator, and coolers. It’s bigger, surprised that there is a difference, but now see we’re the intercooler sits. I have all the radiators and coolers from the xi, except the module it sits in, and the ps cooler.
