Technical Shrick Stage 1 Low-Lift cam results

Getting things under control and will have final results soon.

These new knock sensors really work, had the headphones on the motor and the stock ones where picking up false knock but who knows why.

Before the cams my motor was silent and after the cams it got noisy, speaking with the guru of tuning aftermarket ecu's here in Aus,
he has helped me a lot sorting through the issues I was having on the hardware side and @V8bait on the software side.

All open loop issues have been sorted, car is insane at 20 psi on e20 up to e30 which helps with the shitty 93 we have here.

I only use E to raise octane to a point where the corrections are at their minimum.

I have to sort out a few throttle issues as the car is too twitchy on/of throttle, makes to much power down low.

Should have everything done in a week or two and I'll lay everything out then and exactly what we went through to achieve our final result.

How is the engine making lots of power down low vs stock cams, I don't understand how is this possible with cams with more duration?

with higher lift and more duration you have more volume of air entering the combustion chamber making more power, I'm making 20 psi and around 8500N or tractive effort at 2600 rpm.

When you increase valve duration (open sooner and closing later) regardless of your intake/exhaust cam centrelines, you are reducing the amount of air that will be trapped in the combustion chamber during low rpms. This is common knowledge and you can read the otto cycle to better understand.
So, from idle(700rpms) to 2000rpms give or take the car must lacks torque, is this the case with these cams?
At what rpms do you feel torque is about the same as before with the stock cams, is this around 2400rpms?

That maybe on stock vanos tables, the car is far more powerful of idle what ever v8bait has done with my tune.

I guess that's his area of expertise and I can't see him sharing trade secrets anytime soon.

@martymil what new knock sensors? Just new OEM ones? I'm getting some false knock on my high lifts cams too

These are not factory knock sensors, the only factory part is the harness with the sensors chopped off and new ones connected.

Mind you if your getting real knock these sensors will pick it up so just make sure it is false knock as these are expensive.

Good to know. Yes I'm pretty sure its false knock since we were getting it at just 4 degrees of timing like you. Have some bigger problems with fuel trims and transmission to address first but that will be my next step

definitely false knock at 4 degrees, did you try and add a little ethanol to bring it up to e20 in on 93 or are you on pure e85.

If on e85 that's definitely false knock.

Once upon a time when I was working at a research institute I ran some calcs through a few multiphysics sims. To be Frank there's power loss somewhere naturally but I think it's more around 1500 or so, which isn't really an issue. A little tweaking of throttle and timing makes up for it. Math is math but honestly dyno time is more useful in the long run. Cams and head work really improve the engine torque as well as turbo compressor efficiency making turbos happier on this platform.

My theory is bmw designed the motor for X output and wanted it everywhere. A small upgrade can allow for huge benefits, and while you lose some down low, it's not like a supra or anything like that, it's not even like a S54.

Anyway, it's not hard to reverse the vanos profiles I run from logs. Obviously there's a little more to it than that but I've never really been one to hide anything, if somebody asks at least. Just seems like the only ones interested are looking to profit lately so

Not to digress, but it's not like VTT is fabricating 02 sensors in their shop. Do we know why they are no longer being sold? Manufacturer availability?
