Well where to begin.

Managed the first event of the year back in February and by the name of the sweet baby Jesus what a disaster that was. Car wouldn't run without missfiring on the custom map. Arch ate my £350 Hoosier. Car died while flashing a map whilst in park so wouldn't roll. Drove 4 hours round trip and spent £150 for 1 pass and hours of heartache. Nightmare.

After some maintenance and slight bodywork tweaks I managed to get it out yesterday.

I ran a 11.59 @ 127mph on a terrible no prep surface and Stage 2+ OTS map. My custom map just isnt performing and my mapper isn't responding to my emails so I'll need a new one, does V8Bait still do it?

Another issue is: my brakes can't hold my rear tyres on the line. Im trying to launch at 2000RPM and my tyres are actually spinning before I leave the line, well, 1 as it's open diff. Is there a way we can electrodigically loosen the torque converter? Or a remedy I can try?

Car was the quickest RWD car of the day, and 7th fastest car of 160. Only got beaten by a pro built RS3, a pro built RX-7 AWD K20 turbo, RS3'S, a Tesla and a Porsche Turbo S. The AWD dominate on that surface so very happy to be hanging with them in my garage built 16 year old shit box.

Here's a video of my 2nd run. You can clearly see the wheel spin as I build the revs. And then half track the car missfires, decided to run the OTS map after that. Also. What outstanding camera work by my buddy. He's an inspiration.

How I overcome the issue with the rear wheels turning on the line is to hold the button in on the hand brake with a piece of racing tape so that the hand brake can be freely pulled up and down and hold it on in conjunction with your foot brake while building up the revs on the line. Release both on launching. I achieved a 1.57s 60' time using this method.

Brilliant mate thanks for that. Can't believe I didn't think of that 😂

Managed to get out again to my local drag strip on Sunday there. Had a bit of an eventful start with my tow cars brake caliper piston seizing en route. Managed to get the disc cooled and piston free'd up though so still made it.

Car ran amazing. This time I had my Protuner Stage 2 LPFP fitted and ran an E40 blend. Logs were all spot on with the only issue being throttle closures due to slightly overboosting (inlets and outlets on an OTS map). Between arriving late, rain in the afternoon and it being super busy I only managed 3 runs. Best time was 11.46 @ 127mph. So beat my previous PB by 0.13 of a second. Still have a lot of fiddling to do with my rear shocks and tyre pressures so I think there's something left on the table. Managed a 1.95 60ft with Coupes66 tip on the handbrake, that was on a practice section though, cant seem to get under 2.02 on the actual strip. I'm still green though, got plenty of seat I need to catch up on.

[media]

Will be out again on the 9th, hopefully with a welded diff and custom E40 tune.

It appears by the video that you are spinning the tires on launch and leaving 2 black stripes up the track. You may need to drop the tire pressures if that is the case. That will get your 60' time down further. I ran my car on Friday night with the 8HP75 on pump gas and managed a 11.30s @ 123mph and a 60' time of 1.75s taking off in 2nd with trans brake.

Once I weld the diff I'll be able to scrub the tires and get some heat in them, done a few and it's only spun 1 wheel so don't bother with them currently. I'm also launching in 1st, I tried a 2nd gear launch on the practice strip and monitored my 60fts with dragy, every launch was slower in 2nd. That may just be me though so I'll be sure to practice more.

keep us updated ! 10s are very possible on stock turbos but decent prep is a must. 60 foot is where its at. Cheers

Definitely will. Decent prep and Crail don't go together 😂 I hate bashing it strip because the effort they put in to give us it is amazing, but it's an old ww1 base recommissioned during ww2 and due to it being a historic site they can't actually upgrade the runway surface, it really is beyond a poor surface. Very bumpy as well. There's moss and grass growing on the surface, really is as grass roots as you get, literally 😂

I have always found 1st gear launches result in better times than 2nd gear launches.

It's definitely me, the car isnt a road car so the only time I get seat time is the track, which means Im very green.

If I manage out on the 9th I'll practice launching in 2nd a good number of times. I'm taking a little more weight out the car and with a proper tune for my set up I'll love to shave another 0.1 of a second off my times

Managed out to Crail again recently, mid 11's as usual, wasn't able to beat my fastest but hey ho at least I got out and didn't crash. Only difference was the fibreglass bonnet:

PXL_20230826_195806738.jpg

Not a fan of the M3 bonnet on a non M car but couldn't find any non M ones. Im also removing the hinges and fitting quick release fittings where they would have been, so I can just whip the bonnet off when I need to. My mate printed me these up:

IMG-20230903-WA0000.jpgIMG-20230903-WA0001.jpgIMG-20230903-WA0002.jpg

Carbon fibre reinforced plastic so strong with decent weight savings. And my mate gets to use his 3D printer. Wins all round.

Realised I was running a Stage 3 XHP version from 2018, so I updated that 😂 Man it's got some serious new features, has anyone tried drag race mode?

I'm also still having traction issues and it dawned on me, when a wheel breaks traction all the power is going to that until it hooks, rather than propel the car. So I but the bullet and bought a spare diff that I'll get welded and swap out on race day. That'll also allow me to burnout properly so should help my 60ft.

Good news on the car, despite thinking it would never to be road legal again (and removing and binning a lot of stuff and wiring due to this) I decided I wanted it back on the road. This required it passing an 'MOT', similar to an inspection. It was a lot of effort reversing the work I'd done (retro fitting a demister, re-wiring removed parts, refitting a windscreen, dash etc) but I managed it.

As you can see the 'dash' I had before was just the cluster zip tied to my cage 😂
FB_IMG_1708873643131.jpg

Now the interior is a much nicer place to sit.

PXL_20240215_100926225.jpg

I wanted the car back on the road for 3 reasons: 1) theres an event this year that is only eligible to road legal cars and 2) it makes it easier to test before drag days and 3) I want to teach myself how to tune it. It felt so good getting back behind the wheel on the road. I have an event on the 24th of this month and have my tested custom tune and welded diff so looking for improvements. Should be a good year.

Got the car out on Sunday there and it ran absolutely spot on. Ran my custom Wedge 99RON map and there were no codes or missfires. So that's an accomplishment on its own.

Times were slowwwww. 11.8 was my best et, so 0.4 off my pb... but I have reasons (excuses 😂). Last minute trailer issues meant I drove there and back.

IMG-20240324-WA0021.jpgPXL_20240323_110013700.jpg

Instead of running near empty I had just under 3/4 of a tank. With the car now (thankfully) being road legal I also had the polycarbonate windscreen out and normal one back in. Dash, blower, wiper motor and arms and wing mirrors were all in and my lightweight battery was replaced with the OEM. So a good deal of weight had been added.

When reviewing my logs I also discovered I was consistently running well under my boost targets. 17psi being the highest I hit when targeting 21psi. The WGDC wasn't spinning the turbos faster to hit the target so I've read that can be boost solenoids. They've never been replaced so even if it isn't those it's good to get them swapped out.

Should be out again on the 14th of April, hopefully by then I'll have my line lock fitted (had issues during the burnout where I was pushing the front wheels if I didn't have water down) and the new boost solenoids.

Hopefully you can get out and make some better passes after you get your tune adjusted. You should easily be in the 10's. My car ran 10.90's at 128mph with nothing but standard bolt-ons, a pair of RB 2 turbs (15t?), and a soft second gear launch on standarrd 265 street tires. That's a stock weight, full interior car. That was with a E40 tune at 25psi by Justin (V8Bait). Sure wish he was still tuning cars...that guy has the magic touch.

Yeah man at a prepped track I should be in the 10's with everything working right. But Crail (my local track) is a totally different beast. It's a WW1 concrete runway they aren't allowed to refurbish due to it's historic status. There's bumps and holes and grass growing on the track 😂 Some people actually run better on the street than at Crail.

IMG_20240327_164842_507.jpg

Now my excuses are out the way 😂 My 60ft is by far my weak point. A combination of me being very green behind the wheel and traction is really hurting my times. Hopefully the car and myself will improve as the year goes on.

Managed another event and again.. poor times but car ran flawless so that's always a win. 11.8 seems to be the new benchmark. Feels horrible going backwards but the 11.4 I ran isn't a fair comparison as the car was on E50 and a fair bit lighter. I'm hopefully going to Santa Pod in September. Pod is a proper prepped track and a lot of guys who've run both Pod and Crail (my local no prep) say they run a full second faster there. I'll probably run a full second slower.

IMG_2702 (1).jpg

Fitted and tested my DIY line lock . Decided to fit it to the rear so I could control my rollout. Not the neatest but for $115 I really can't complain. This'll really help me get more consistent burnouts.

PXL_20240815_160359145.jpg

Also ordered a set of fibreglass doors. I removed my door to help me getting in and out of the car while it's in my shed and man it felt heavier than I remembered. Im sure I weighed it at 16kg but I need to do it again on proper scales as it felt around 20kg+. Doesn't really matter now as the fibreglass doors only weigh 4kg. They have shipped so should arrive very soon. Have an event on the 28th so hopefully see some kind of improvement.

What's your car weight? That track must really be horrible....my 07' 335i with nothing but bolt-ons, RB 2's, and a good E40 tune went 10.90 at 128mph at the track a couple of years ago, and that was with a soft 2nd gear launch. Full weight, normal street tires, nothing fancy. That track must really be a mess.

I haven't had it weighed but it must be getting pretty light even with me putting a little extra weight back in it.

I can't blame solely the track, I've not got a lot of seat time and I don't claim to be any kind of whizz behind the wheel so I've got a big part in this slowness.

I don't like bashing Crail as it's the only 1/4 mile track in Scotland and is only £20 to race on. But yeah it's a mess. To be fair though it isn't actually a track. It's a historic site that organisers rent from the local council for the day. They aren't allowed to do any work on it and all the timing stuff etc can't be left. So they set it up every track day then dismantle at the end, which takes some effort. So I'm grateful for that. But yeah as mentioned people run faster on the streets than Crails old WW2 runway, and a full second faster at Santa Pod which is a proper prepped track. But I like that, makes it trickier and is a good equaliser.
