@Terry@BMS notes that the data displayed was pretty old and many things had changed. Evenm after that, there has been a lot of progress made in VANOS tuning to make the singles spool a lot faster. This tuning helps the upgraded twins too, so it is not clear how much of an advantage the twins still have below 4,000 RPM.
Another factor that needs to be considered is how much torque these engines and transmissions can handle down low before rod bearings and clutch packs become a problem. I would guess that the single would be safer on the parts from this perspective.
I once read a thread where I recall Terry saying something to the effect of "If your goal is 600HP, or less, go twins". Since then singles have gotten better down low, and twins have gotten better up top. The 600HP "glass ceiling" for twins have been shattered for a long time now.
Then we have to consider reliability and ease of maintenance ...
