Who recommended those? They should work but they are not quite OEM spec and only 250V, look similar though. The recommended temps would make them more difficult to hand replace, I'd probably damage them during install, but a true electrical guy would probably have good luck with them easily. The Fairchild 14N30 has a good bit more wiggle room, I tend to use damn near the highest temp on the air solder gun to save the rest of the board lol. But I've only done like 7 or 8 so might be doing it wrong so I try to aim for caution.

Pretty sure it was an old BB thread that had a link to them. I'll just keep the Fairchild ones in mind for if my msd80 ever follows suit with all the others.
PR already went out of their way to help you. You didn't do a full diagnosis of why the problem existed, and it seems clear to me what the problem was. So I think this thread is kind of a crappy thing to do towards PR. But I'll leave it alone, glad your car is running well.
Did you use the BMW branded ones or Bosch equivalent and what exact part number was it?
Seems to have been deleted from N5x Enthusiasts so I'll say my piece here. TL;DR OP installed PR coils, did a LOT of fixing up to take care of misfires / replace old injectors / other typical N54 problems, then when everything's fixed he swaps on BL coils and claims the car "likes them better".
OF COURSE it likes the BL coils better, you installed them AFTER fixing everything that was causing the car to act up and blaming it on PR coils. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're a paid shill for Bimmerlife but he already gets plenty of exposure through Omar / Vader Solutions.

Yes I did do a full diagnosis. No it's not clear. You were not in my shoes or my car. So you frankly have no say in what I did.
I installed PR coils and it STARTED the chain of misfire which requires me to do the fixing. 3+ years no misfires on 20 psi with Bosch coils.

None of you know what exactly happened. This is a rundown of the experience. Period. For a car to be running perfectly fine then have an onslaught of problems, which according to you guys were there. No they weren't. And I still wouldn't have had to replace anything if I never touch the PR coils. Blew a mosfet. Which caused the injectors to start leaking. Which caused the messed up plugs, and so on.
You're showing your inexperience. If you were as familiar as you think with these cars, you would know that it is par for the course to have an oem fueling or ignition component take a shit on you when you replace ANY component that makes, or helps make, more power. You added stress to the system and the weakest link broke. If you had added the BL coils first, you'd be in the same boat, assuming they have a high enough output to match the PR coils.
I think antiochasylum got to share his experience that's what forums are for and what grows a community. Everyone has the right to form an opinion. We have our opinion as well but it's time to let this thread go for us and HIGHLY suggest everyone do the same. The history is here and that is what is important so that people can learn and also build opinions but this is starting to turn into a finger pointing session and discourages members from posting their experiences which is not good for the community as a whole.
We will add one last bit of information which as a whole is good news. The mechanic that installed these first and repaired his DME first has been also having the same exact issues for over a month now. They have one more set on another car that is doing fine but these 2 sets both had problems (or the cars did who knows not here put blame on anyone or take blame yet). But we are excited that good came from this thread he has reached out and will be returning his set of coils to us. Since we will be receiving the possible defective we can evaluate them see if there are any issues with the coils and make any necessary changes to ensure no others have the same issue. This is how the community grows and is our main goal, are we a business yes, but we are here to grow and develop the community #1.
For now these are the only 2 customers having this problem and we have shipped just under 1,000 coils now around the globe. So we don't suspect we will find any issues that need to be addressed but are excited to have one of the problem sets being returned so we can evaluate them.
With that said we would advise locking the thread or discourage others from posting opinions. If we find any issues with the coils we will make sure it gets shared on the forum with a link from here to the new thread. All value added posts have been made up to this point now it's just bickering that will discourage others from posting their experiences with vendor products.

Short recap.... There were 3 sets of coils installed at a single facility one set had no issues, the shop owners car which we were told were "defective", and the OP here which also claimed to have "defective" coils. The OP never returned coils to us so we never got to inspect or test them so we don't know if they were truly defective all things are possible. However the shop owner did ask if he could return his believing they were defective and we are providing an update based on our findings for those coils.
The coils were received and bench tested with an oscilloscope against our design requirements and found to be within tolerance of all requirements (not even close to the thresh hold of bad). But we owe it to our customers to do stringent testing in the rare event we have a product fail or returned. As a result the entire returned kit (wires, mount, bolts, coils, connectors) the entire used kit was installed on a car.
We have had this used set of potentially defective coils on a car for exactly 60 days now. The car was ran with our standard MHD flash and without for the first week and zero issues were found. We have since used these coils for pushing the limits of the DME and greatly abusing the coils outside of the stress levels found in the public released tables such as the ones we provided to MHD. For the remainder of the 60 days these coils have travels several thousand miles during ambient temperatures daily in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The coils have been ran 30% harder on dwell then they normally are in our public tables. We also left multi spark enabled to make the coils fire much more frequently stressing them even further. By making both of these changes it put a great deal of additional stress on the IGBT in the DME for the coils. However through close monitoring we found the DME to be more than capable of this over extended dwell time even with multi spark enabled (which we expected to be a non issue as we were fully aware of the limits around 30amps for each IGBT in the DME which is massive and we are not pushing limits of).
In conclusion there were no found issues with any component of the ignition kit returned to us not even in abusive conditions were any issues found. We can only assume the same would be found for OP since him and his mechanic experienced the same issues on both cars and the coils by OP were never returned to us despite our request to do so.
In addition this testing shows that despite claims that the higher output of our coils could strain the DME and cause premature failure to be false as we have stated all along. We never once triggered the safeties built into the DME for coming close to these thresholds.

Pretty much knew OP was a retard when you repaired his DME and Mosfets, including parts, shipping, and install for $83. And he complained.
We closely monitor vendor to vendor remarks. We do not monitor member interaction unless there is a complaint and/or we find the content overly inappropriate or further excasperating a thread headed for the trash bin. We do appreciate if people act civilized, and classy as there are plenty of palaces to go to find a toxic environment.
So which coil type are most people going with these days? BL (more advanced tech?) or PR (older tech?) not considering these one off things like what the OP experienced?
I guess, is there any advantage in going with one versus the other considering from the sound of it, the manufacturers took different approaches to solving the same problem.
I've compared most every relevant coil and posted most of the results as non-biased as possible. Results not posted were mainly secondary output due to the different designs complicating accurate measurement, and torture testing because, well, I just decided not to for now. There's benefits to both systems for different reasons. If you want 3rd party reviews as technical as I got well good luck sir.
