Fire extinguisher in the car?

So I had a small fuel leak today and realized I have no fire extinguisher nearby. So I got to snooping around and apparently BMW had a couple fire extinguishers made:

The second one when I research it brings up parts for the Z4 but it looks like the part numbers are just a bracket and supposedly it was installed in an M3. I don't think this red bracket is included and I'm not sure which extinguisher actually goes with the black piece that connects to the seat:

Does anyone have either of these fire extinguisher units?

I’d like to know if there are any other good mounting points other than under the passenger seat. I have a passenger 80% of the time I drive and it looks like it can get in the way a bit there. I’d hate for the gf or whoever is riding with me to kick it or hit/cut themselves on the bracket.

This is the driver seat I believe. If I was pinned in there somehow, or the passenger side of the car was crushed in, I'd want it next to me. If the driver side of the car is crushed in, I'm already dead.

Hmm, I guess I assumed it was the passenger side because it’s mostly what I’ve seen. I vaguely recall seeing somewhere that it’s usually not mounted on the driver’s side for safety reasons such as it coming loose and interfering with the pedals, etc. At least that’s what I’ve alwat thought too. Lol.

I just ordered the OEM pump from Germany. I'll post photos when it gets here.

I usually get the Fire extinguishers from Home Depot since they are made for household use, they cover electrical, oil and debris fires. Be aware of that when you purchase fire extinguishers that there are different ones for different types of fires.

The OEM extinguisher says ABC on the label, so hopefully the one I get is the same. Pretty sure ABC extinguishers are common for most uses including gasses and fuel, etc. I don't need a big extinguisher, but I do want to be able to quickly pull over if I see or smell some smoke, pop the hood and make an attempt to put out a fire. Swinging my shirt at the fire will likely result in watching it get worse and worse and probably a few internal tears along with a burnt shirt.

Just a heads up, certain dry chemical extinguishers are corrosive to finish and electrical components. There are fire extinguishers that are designed for automotive use but are pretty pricey (Halotron H3R etc). I still carry a small ABC fire extinguisher in a milk crate that i positioned in my trunk though. Should probably move it inside the cabin.

This extinguisher installed here is a premium "clean agent" fire extinguisher that does not leave a messy residue making it the perfect product for protecting classic collector, high performance, tuner, and race cars. AND it is very nice looking unit. ---Linky...

I ordered mine from Jegs. If you live near others interested in this extinguisher, I recommend you organize and order multiples in a single shipment. There is a hazardous material fee tacked on to the shipment and it seems to be the same whether you order 1 or more. I ordered 2 and paid $38 to ship and it was the same if I ordered 1. I entered 4 into the order form and got the same $38 fee.

I like this, the only problem is the mounts for an E93 look very different.

Also, schiedman messaged me and say they have cancelled my order because they can't ship the extinguisher because its considered a hazardous material. Does anyone know ANY way to legally get a fire eextinguisher from Europe to the USA?

Ha.... I edited this part out of my copied post thinking it was not Relevant.

You can't get that brought in. You need to get a local extinguisher and you will pay a hazardous shipping fee.

I e heard you can ship hazardous materials just don't know how. Maybe go through a company that offers this service?

I just don't see the need. That BMW extinguisher is lame.

Track down a compatible mount for where you want it (attached to the seat), then adapt it to fit the mount that comes with a newer high quality extinguisher.

I am in the same boat with my Z4... I can't find the mount that attaches to the seat of my Z4. Made a lame attempt at making one but I think I will check in with @Steven@ClarkPerformanceFab and send him a template. I suck at cutting metal (but I can make some nice wood cabinets!)

That's the issue, having things that don't fit right or don't look stock drives me nuts. @dyezak gave me a good idea to discharge it then ship it. I just need to find someone who will do that for me.

Yes, for posterity sake: discharge your fire extinguisher then ship it. One you get it take it to your local fire department and have them refill it.

Not my idea. My brother is a fire fighter.

Thanks for the tag @NoQuarter. I was just thinking about making a bracket for this purpose on my own car this past week. The bracket looks simple enough. I’m just wondering about that quick release latch. If I can sort out where to get the latches from I’ll get a CAD file together and order a CNC laser cut batch. Just want to make sure there is enough interest first to justify a large quantity order.

I think a full fire suppression system with the suppression bottles mounted where the factory subs are would be my preference. A couple nozzles under hood, a couple in the dash, and one in the trunk. That would be 2 kits. Perfect, one bottle under the driver and one under the passenger.

I wonder how many people would spend the money on a full suppression system though. I would say only a handful of these cars are actually dedicated track cars that would justify the cost for insurance.
