Anodized ring lands addresses a different issue than thickness, the rings are very hard, as is the anodized layer, whereas bare aluminum is very soft.

Is microwelding a common issue on BMW engines? Since BMW engines are equipped with Mahle pistons from the factory (as far as I know), does anyone know if Mahle uses anodized ring lands on any of their OEM pistons, or is this only a feature on their aftermarket or motorsport pistons?

I don't know, lol! Seeing how hard rings are, it seems like they'd want a hard anodized layer over the soft aluminum where it contacts the hard rings to avoid wear issues in the aluminum, but maybe it's not that big of a problem?
