Thoughts on VANOS and (Lean?) Spool Strategy

(Flash time redundancy.)
You're probably right about coils not fixing timing corrections. Compression-based ignition versus spark-based ignition. Duh.
Get me some ethanol to suppress the compression-based ignition!
Asking quite a bit of stock turbos, honestly, those corrections aren't that bad. Little E85 might be all it needs if it's that borderline. Could always try playing with VANOS or reducing timing request there by 0.5-1° too.

Just needed @RSL to say it out loud
Glad I'm not the only one. I start typing something and then it hits me when I see it writing lol

Maybe I'll do meth injection as the only E85 source in Philly stopped selling 6 months ago and the alternate, Omega Fuels, is moving too. Damn:mad:

I hate to say it, but E85 will be plentiful again once oil goes above $100/bbl

Jeff,

Keep an eye on your STFT's if you decide to run a gallon of e85 to combat detonation.

You're seeing a bit of correction around 4800 or so. I would be willing to say it could be a vanos related issue or a hair too much timing. maybe a .05 or so could be removed. Im wondering if its vanos related because it shows up again around the same RPM post shift.

Im also of the opinion that the timing is re-introduced a hair too quickly on the auto cars. It needs to be a split second more gradual. I know jake is working on a timing reintroduction table that should help. Its in WIP so not sure when we'll see it.

You're definitely twisting on these stockers pretty good.

Also, definitely log IAT. I always log oil temp as well. That could be the source of your corrections.

Id like to take a look at your .bin if you'd be willing to share it.

E85 no longer available. I'm looking at purchasing bulk ethanol somehow - like a 5 gal jug.

Regarding timing: are you suggesting lowering around 0.5 degrees?

VANOS is certainly a possibility.
I'll log in from my laptop with TunerPro and post my VANOS tables - let me know if you have any suggestions.

Also several weeks ago I had VANOS DME errors (half-engine light) and after clearing the errors I removed, cleaned and switched the two solenoids - no more codes at all. But I had logged VANOS in/ex warm moving and saw several degrees difference between request and actual values. Original VANOS solenoids 2008/62.6K miles...when do people usually replace them?

Here you go. Let me know what you think.
(It wouldn't upload *.bin files so I changed it to *.txt ... make sure to change it back to *.bin obviously.)
I've been tweaking this for about a year now. It's many generations from one spxxx had posted last year for E40, which I adapted for 93Oct.

Interesting. You're one of the only other people besides myself and maybe 1 or two others that have run the WGDC (RPMxsetpoint) mapping. That being said, I think the car has plenty of fuel, you could probably get boost to come online a bit faster by leaning it out a bit down low... like <4000. You could take advantage of spool mode mapping a bit more for that. Also, Im not sure how much more power you're getting from running over 22psi. Have you tried lowering the boost and experimented with adding timing?

One other thing that I personally do is to start logs at 2500. I have this thing about putting boost to them down low like that. I think it puts extra stress on things. (just my .02). Especially with that RPMxsp, you can make boost ramp up crazy fast.

@Jeffman Id replace ur vanos solenoids. U got a full life out of them. They'll probably last a little longer before throwing a fault but not hitting target is likely an indication of their internal wear. @all4bspinnin @Jeffman going to start on rpm x setpoint control tonight. Did u guys tune with the original wgdc tables before and prefer rpm×setpoint? I was gonna go over my previous logs and build the table off of final wgdc %

You can do that. I actually designed mine based off the initial release post. I looked at my set points and adjusted it from there which is essentially what you're doing. One thing id like to caution you on before you get started is how fast boost can come online with the stockers using this logic. I would personally do what jeffman did and limit your overall wgdc to 70 to 80% vs going 100%. It takes some time but once its dialed in, its amazing.

I do not use this logic on people I've tuned though. I use the stock boost control. On my personal car I use it because I'm in control at all times. I havent done much with this logic lately but if you set it up properly, its good.

Any time man! I'm all about sharing info. We need more of it out there. Especially on a lot of the uncommon things we need to adjust

Not sure if you can see the attached pics but this was used on an mmp stage 3 car. It made 14psi before 3k. I ended up slowing the spool down and starting logs from 2500. I didnt feel comfortable which how much torque they put on the motor at that rpm

I started with the stock base WGDC table and then worked off my logged actual WGDC values to 1) avoid boost oscillations in the transition after Spool up into the max Torque region (at about 3500-4000 rpm), and 2) to keep boost high and hit Load targets all the way out to 5500 rpm before drop off.

Take a look at my logs. My WGDC (RPM x Boost Setpoint) table is 70-80 at low rpm, but my logged numbers during Spool up and higher are 98-99! Lots of swooshing! So even though I'm using this logic there are still PID corrections apparently being made to actual WGDC to hit Load targets.

Compare WGDC Bank 1% (actual) versus WGDC base value % (table):

Thought I remembered Jake saying to 0 zero out on the RPM x Setpoint logic, found it. It's basically only using the PID to control WGs. Really wish it worked on other than IA80S/IJE0S. I almost went all the way back to IJE0S_IS for it, but that rom sucks for DCT. I don't know why more people that can use it don't.

Base, pre-control, adder, ceiling adder, and wgdc spool are ignored. I'd recommend 0'ing them out, as well as the wgdc to pos and pos back set to 0 as well. You just want to use the new table + PID

Yea, I saw that. PID still corrects for error. which is nice!
