It is the other way around, adds exhaust gaz to intake air by opening the intake valves while the cylinder pressure is still a little bit higher than intake pressure. At least if i remember correctly, it is also what burns the oil and turns it into carbon deposit.

This is a frustrating case for sure. Takes a lot of personal energy to deal with something like that has no "fun" factor.
