I have found that pretty much the only time a radar detector helps is for red light cameras and on completely open highway where troopers are banging cars from miles down the road. In pretty much every other situation the radar detector is only going to be able to tell you that a cop JUST TOOK YOUR SPEED. Too late.

Same here. Sometimes too far ahead and my detector is installed down low behind the plastic bumper cover
I mean I guess you can say that it also depends on what type of radar the cop is using... Here in New York the cruisers are decked out with the latest directional equipment. I don't know of any cops using always-on radar they only turn it on when they want to nab people.
