For quite some time I ran BMS Dual Cone Intakes. I got them them for very cheap but without the paperwork. Since I live in Germany and don't want the hassle with police and such I searched for alternatives. First thing was to get an understanding how important these cones are. Apparently many people got many different results (who would have thought that measuring horsepower on such systems can be very flawed) but the main conclusion was that the inlets are way more restrictive than the original air box. However it seems that the restriction of the air box comes to play at about 450hp. From here on the dual cone seem to do better. However the Mr 5 alternative keeps a somewhat original look with the benefit of contributing a overall larger airflow. Since I daily my car, racing air filters won't be too good of keeping dirt out of the system, that's why I came up with a solution, which I think might be a good alternative for those who run BOV. I literally just installed small air filters on the silicone inlets, right where the DV would connect. I believe that these might deliver a higher airflow at high demanding loads. Also I noticed that below the air filter is plenty of space to, almost invisible, install an air cone in Mr5 style. This will be my next move, however this mod needs modifying the original air box.
Maybe this is an interesting alternatives to the already existing ones and im curious to your thoughts on this

Nice bit of alternative thinking…

The problem is without massive computational fluid dynamics modelling or empirical dyno based before / after testing who knows..

Whether it’s better or worse than a Mr.6 mod again who knows…

Purists would argue that the air flowing through that small holder will engender turbulence in the inlet pipe which generally is bad news…on my Mr.5 mod I blended the intake inside the box to help smooth the air mixing from the two sources..

If you’re into really high speed runs the ram air effect of the stock system seems to be useful and this technique doesn’t really play to that..

I know my dyno boys have done lots of air intake development for both air intake /filter manufacturers and the public..

Apart from DCIs nothing much seemed to work better than the stock box…

They were amazed at how well the Mr.5 mod worked on my E89 35is..so much so that we had to reverse it out to confirm it was so..

Enjoy..

It matters to some. I wouldn't run that set up personally. EVER. I am happy with the performance and the looks of my engine bay. To each their own though.
I agree. I want it to look as good as possible. But OP asked for alternatives. WHILE WERE DISCUSSING OPTICS: DCI look about as bad as possible. Maybe the WORST option aesthetically speaking.

He asked in title but he more wanted to share what his solution is/was.
Dci can look decent depending on the set up. I can pm u pics of mine if you like.

Maybe I'll dedicate my student research papers in my Simulation lecture simulating these different options, would surely be interesting

Can you please post it here in this thread. Personally I'd love to see but I think there might be more people who want to

Given that several big boys have played around with these inlet issues I suspect an under graduate go may not save the day..🧐😂🤓
