So the other day me and my buddy where driving around in his m4 comp and i noticed after we parked and shut the car off his radiator fan continued to run at a slow speed for about a minute to cool the engine off. This got me thinking.
I know n54 engines are able to do something similar and also have a post shut down operation that can continue to operate the water pump to circulate coolant, and even run the radiator fan.
But my question is, what are the parameters that determine this operation?
I have done some digging around in ista+ and looking at how it all works but couldn’t find any information pretty much anywhere on what information the dme uses to determine the operation.
Is there a set temperature threshold that triggers the pump or fan or both to run for a designated amount of time? i am curious can these parameters be changed?
The reason i ask is because i noticed on my vehicle it seems completely random.
Sometimes after driving very hard my waterpump wont run at all, despite the engine seemingly being incredibly hot.
But other times i could just cruise to the store and back and ill hear it running and the coolant circulating.
As for my radiator fan, i think i have only ever seen it run once very briefly after shut down a long time ago.
I would be interested in changing these parameters if its possible. It would be nice if my pump and fan ran briefly after shutdown for say a minute or two. It seems like it would be beneficial considering how hot these engines run and how long they stay hot after shut down.
